How to save money when dealing with a contactor

  • First, to find a good contractor - ask your neighbors. A satisfied customer is a better choice than sticking a pin in the Yellow Pages.
  • Make sure your contractor has parking spot. You want him to spend his time working with his tools, not carrying them up the block and back.
  • Clean the work area before he gets there. Do you really want to pay him for cleaning the junk out from under your sink?
  • And make sure that he has plenty of elbow room.
  • Don't buy cheap materials. It takes much longer to work with rubbish than it does with quality materials. And you get a better job when it is finished.
  • Mistakes!!! Yes we all make mistakes.
A light hearted "Oops, you missed a spot" will get the mistake fixed quickly. If you make a big fuss you will make the poor guy upset and nervous and your job will take longer.
  • A cup of coffee or glass of water will be most welcome, but don't use that as an excuse to chat for an hour.
  • If you have any questions, save them 'till after you have paid, then they won't be on the clock.
  • Ask him if he pays a referral fee if you get him a job with a neighbor, or maybe a discount on your next job.
